Position Summary:
Cloud Security Architects report to the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and are responsible for planning, designing, guiding, and architecting public cloud-based IT systems and solutions to support the compliant research and administrative computing at the University of Idaho.
The Cloud Security Architect is a senior level cybersecurity position as part of the Information Security Office, in the Office of Information Technology (OIT) and maintains advanced technology and cybersecurity expertise to ensure confidentiality, integrity and availability standards are met consistent with contractual and regulatory compliance, U of I policy, and in support of the U of I mission and strategic direction. The position plays a lead role in designing and deploying solutions for protecting regulated data, including for research and administrative functions in public clouds, which may include Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, or Oracle Cloud.
This position works collaboratively with OIT, the Office of Research, Research Computing and Data Services (RCDS) and other campus departments to deliver cloud solutions to meet the needs of the university.
Duties may include:
  • Developing processes and systems for building and maintaining cloud systems and enclaves in an efficient, compliant, and repeatable fashion.
  • Coordinating incident management and escalation for security incidents in university-managed public cloud infrastructure.
  • Delivering cybersecurity expertise through a deep understanding of the academic and research environment, IT security technologies, and processes in support of the university research mission.
  • Maintaining and applying understanding of NIST frameworks to public cloud solutions.
  • Providing timely operational, technical, and consultative guidance to promote a secure and compliant technology environment.
  • Maintaining confidentiality and acting with the highest ethical standards.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in computer science, cyber security, or information technology; four additional years of experience stated above (for a total of twelve) may substitute for a bachelors degree.
  • Eight years of experience designing and deploying infrastructure in the public cloud, or a mix of IT and/or information security experience that includes at least two years of experience leading engineering or architecture in the public cloud.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree in Cybersecurity or a related field.
  • Current cloud certifications, such as: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, or AWS Certified Solutions Architect
  • Current, relevant security certifications, including but not limited to: GCLD, GCPN, GCSA, GPEN, and CISSP.
  • Experience with Identity and Access Management solutions including Azure Active Directory, SAML, and InCommon federation
  • Knowledge of AWS and/or Azure global infrastructure and services.
  • Experience deploying solutions in AWS GovCloud or Azure for Government.
  • Knowledge of cloud network concepts, including VPCs, VPN, availability zones, regions, network segmentation, hybrid DNS, and their equivalents.
  • Knowledge of cloud security, compliance, and identity tools.
  • Knowledge and experience with infrastructure as code, AWS CloudFormation, Terraform, or similar tools
  • Knowledge and experience with cloud key management tools such as AWS KMS or Azure Key Vault
  • Knowledge of research, administrative and instructional computing needs in a land-grant university (including library support, university advancements, academic and administrative services).
  • Excellent conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in customer service demonstrating skills in listening/reading for understanding, professionalism, collaboration, advocacy, objectivity, diligence, and flexibility.
  • Strong organization, writing and communication skills; must clearly communicate technical issues and resolutions to customer/clients, other departments, and senior management.
  • Experience applying or auditing NIST SP800-171, or similar frameworks to cloud solutions.
  • Familiarity and understanding of the research project lifecycle, from pre-proposal and budgeting through funding, execution, and reporting.
  • Knowledge of the Open Science / Open Data requirements of most federal funding agencies (NSF, NIH, etc.)
  • Experience with shared research cyberinfrastructure, including shared High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems, science gateways, science DMZs and scientific data repositories.
  • Experience with information security related issues involving intrusion detection, network architecture, forensics, incident management, risk management and/or auditing.
